Ocean Goddess…

The ocean at this time of the year is absolutely mesmerizing to me.  Before moving to California, I never really thought of the ocean as something that would change with the seasons. How could I think that something so immense and sprawling, yet fluid, could change on the spin of a planet? Growing up in land locked Ohio I was used to seeing the trees change. But, they’re trees. You can see the whole thing from the right vantage point. Of course they’re small enough to be affected by the seasons.  But the ocean is  HUGE. You can’t see it from a vantage point that you can walk to reach.

It amazes me, the changes I can see in the Pacific Ocean when the seasons change. In this part of California we’re known for our surf. It crashes year round without fail. It’s the size of the crash that changes. The winter storms that drift across the waters churn them up and send waves to the coast that burst with an energy that has to be seen to be believed. You can feel them thump, then you see them spray white plumes up over the rocks so high you can’t help but say “wow!” when you see it. It’s like watching fireworks.

I can’t help but wonder while watching those waves, how do all of those creatures living amongst the rocks handle all of that energy crashing around them? Then I see a sea otter pop it’s head up between the waves, with a mussel in it’s hand ready to feast. Then I notice the pelicans diving and weaving in and out of the waves. It seems as if this is prime time for feeding! All of that action and there they are out there in the middle of it all, having a meal, going about their daily routine as if nothing has changed.

Maybe we can take a lesson from those critters out there. When things start going crazy around us and life start throwing us some pretty big waves…should we just keep truckin’ and taking care of those things we know we need to take care of? I know a lot of people who forget to eat when they get stressed or overworked (myself included). Yet the otter is out there in the thick of it having lunch. Who knew I’d be reminded of that important life lesson by watching an otter in the surf? Take the time to feed yourself, physically or spiritually, no matter what’s crashing around you, it’s important.

Just my thoughts before bed. Yes, I blogged three times in one day today. I was feeling chatty. :)

Blessings.
Peace.
