Steam Dream Necklace

Steam Dream Necklace

This month’s challenge over at Art Bead Scene is “Full Steam Ahead”. The steam comes from a style movement called Steampunk. Imagine post apocalyptic Victorians with steam power mixed with sci fi and throw in a punk flavor. Get it? Google steampunk, and you will.

This necklace is my submission to the challenge. It’s the first time I’ve ever tried to make a streampunk piece. There’s a lot of SP jewelry out there. Etsy is full of it. Personally, I never cared for it, but I figured it would be good to challenge myself and stretch my comfort zone a bit.

I had fun with this piece. It uses a lot of different metals and that always makes me happy. There’s brass, pewter and steel in this piece in a few different finishes to keep the eye moving through out the design. It also makes a lovely tinkling sound when it moves, appealing to yet another sense!

This is one of the rare pieces that kiddo really got excited about. It tickles me when he gets excited about something I make. Usually, he humors me and says things are nice. Occasionally I use his artistic input on pieces, which makes me (and him!) really happy. But, when he lights up when I shop him a piece, it just makes me smile one of those big goofy mom smiles. He kept picking the necklace up all day, just to look at it and see what else he could find in it!

There are a lot of pieces to this one. My Other Mother sent me some of the coolest vintage keys earlier this year. The brass key fron and center is one of them. It has amazing scroll details on the top and it reads “P&F Corbin New Britan CT” and then it’s blank on the other side. Also in the mix is a groovy vintage transit token from LA that I uncovered in an antique store recently. I also threw in a handmade key from Mamacita Beadworks, an enamel spiral charm from my friend Ashley, and a hand stamped “FLY” charm that I made from a steel washer.

Hopefully this fits the spirit of Steampunk. I think it does, but then again, I’m kinda partial. ;)

I’ll have this listed in my NEW shop on Art Fire in a couple of days! Drop me a line if you need to get yoru hot little hands on this baby before then.
