My bird…

The Great Blue Heron means a lot to me. He reminds me to be still, and allow the things that I need to come to me, rather than thrashing around grasping in the dark. I have a portrait tattooed on my leg. This bird…is my spirit guide. This particular bird had been hit by a car, and the people who found it tried to treat it’s broken wing on their own, rather than taking him to a vet. Because of that, the bird is unable to fly with a permanently damaged wing, so he lives at the nature center, in the aviary.

Yesterday we went to the Coyote Point Museum to visit with the animals and take some photographs. They have a small aviary with permanently injured birds there. One of them is this lovely Great Blue who’s name is John. It was feeding time and he was being very gracious to let me take so many pictures of him. If i posted all of them, well, there would be about 150 of them. So, here’s a few for now.

Preening Heron Stretch

Stretching his wings before his meal. Once again, not the best shot, but I thought it was a neat one.

They have several animals there on display. Another one of my favorites is the bobcat. It was lounge time for this cat, and getting a shot of it behind glass was tough, but it’s the best I could do.

Isn’t it beautiful? I have no idea if it’s a male or female, all I know is it’s a sight to behold! Of course, I snapped a ton of pictures as well, and spent some time just watching it. Lounging, yawning, cleaning, then lounging some more.

What are you looking at?

Here’s the cutest owl EVAR! It’s a burrowing owl, and stands about 9″ tall. Isn’t it fierce? I don’t know the story behind this little critter, but it’s there at the center. It was watching us throught he glass with much curiosity. Some kids came up and started pounding on the glass, and this is the look they received from the owl. I think it’s something like, “I bet your eyes taste really good!” or “Didn’t your parents teach you any better?” Either way, it made for a great shot as the kids walked off, uninterested.

Now I need to start getting things ready for my trip. I head out on July 11th and will be gone for a few weeks. I’ll have internet access, but not much. I’ll be emptying the shop before I head out, so I don’t have to worry about keeping up with that. When I return I’ll be stocking it up with lots of new things!

Thought I’d sneak over and say howdy before you left on your trip. I really enjoyed your visit to the Nature Center! Have a good time on vacation. Don’t stay gone too long.
