Inspiring Storm…

Have I mentioned that Meteorology was my first true love? I’m sure I have, but I’m mentioning it again.

Springtime in Southern Ohio was always exciting growing up. We lived in the northern section of Ross County. To the north east, and west, it was flat flat flat, you could see for miles. To the south, the Appalachian foothills were on the horizon. We could watch the storms rolling in from a distance, like a massive grey steamroller with lightning flashing around. I was lucky enough to catch glimpses of ball lightning on a couple occasions. Funnel clouds weren’t unheard of. Hail was par for the course. I can remember watching the storms from the window, or from the porch. The smell of the ozonated air charged with electricity is such a memorable scent.

It’s that time of year again. A friend of mine lives down in Kentucky and they were hunkering down for a round of storms a few days ago. She had posted a radar shot of her area, which happened to include my home region.

It inspired a necklace. More than inspired. I was just told to make it. As we all know, when that inner voice says do it, you do it. (Unless it’s killing your in laws or something like that) So I made it.

The colors are inspired by the colors on the radar image. Labradorite was thrown in to represent the stormy skies flashing with lightning. It can be worn as a necklace at 20″ or wrapped around the wrist a few times as a bracelet.

New Things…

Some new things in the Shop have been keeping me busy. It’s also that time of the year here, Spring Cleaning has begun! I spent a couple of days last week resetting my creative space. My old setup was in my bedroom, kinda crammed together, not much space, but it functioned well for me, for a while. Well, I finally had my fill. It was time for a change.

My dining room has been home to my paper obsession. Paper, ephemera, glues a plenty, and everything else I thought I might want to do something with one day. It was overwhelming. I purged that room a few months ago. Last week I moved my beading supplies in to the dining room.

Who uses a dining room for dining anyway? We have an 1100sq ft apartment and that dining room is precious space!

So, now my beloved beads and papers are co existing in the same room. I have a decent sized work table in there, and lots of natural light as well. I can look out the window or the patio doors while I work. Stereo is within arms reach as well as my cd stash. Tools in a jar on the table, bead boxes all organized by color on the shelf behind me to the left.

Wonder how long this will last? Ive decided to no longer sit in bed and work on jewelry. Seeing as I have a hard enough time getting to sleep, my Dr recommended that I try improving my “sleep hygiene”. No wore working in bed. Just relaxing.

So far so good.

Here’s what today brings. Strong Innocent. Smoky Quartz with cultured pearls and copper. It’ll be in the shop soon.

From Jewelry

From Wikipedia: The Banshee (IPA: /ˈbænʃiː/), from the Irish bean sí (”woman of the síde” or “woman of the fairy mounds“) is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. Her Scottish counterpart is the bean shìth (also spelled bean-shìdh).

This piece was a custom order for Faerielady. She collects various Fae themed pieces, and last night we were talking about the Banshee. Inspiration hit quite instantly, and the piece was born a couple hours later. The picture isn’t the best, but it’s all you’re gonna get, because it’s hers, and only hers.

For Faerielady

It contains Jet, Garnet, Silver Moonstone, Iolite, Natural Cat’s Eye, Blue Goldstone, Copper, and Sterling Silver. I love it when a piece comes together like this. It was fast, the inspiration hit from reading the story of the Banshee. There was no thought to it, just do.

As some of you can tell, I’m on a bit of a hiatus with the shop. I have several custom orders that I have been working on recently, that has been taking up a lot of my beading time, which is fine with me. I’d much rather spend my time making things I know are going to specific people, rather than trying to guess what will sell and what won’t. :)
